Selflessness is having more concern with the wants and needs of others than their own. Selflessness doesn’t mean charity as a whole. Selflessness is the opposite of selfishness. For example, if you are selfless, you don’t think about your wishes or desires and you are known as more kind and more generous. Selflessness helps to find and connect with others in a more humanitarian way. Being selfless helps to get over our own egos because our pride is not important to us. For us, selflessness comes out of our heart and soul which helps us to help others and also ourselves in a holistic manner.
Sambhabana Mohanty: I believe broadcast media and society just mirror each other
I will tell you a story about selflessness. A man was known for his selflessness since his childhood. Any person who came to his home or workplace with a problem, he would be the one who immediately would come to the rescue of others. Performing random acts of kindness on a daily basis is one of the rare qualities that he was known for. If someone didn’t bring his lunch dabba, he would be the one who would offer his friends something to eat. He would say that feeding others in need will itself fill his stomach more than others.

Donating to charitable organizations is one of the other qualities that he had. He would donate 10% of his salary to charitable organizations on a regular basis. He was okay with accepting imperfection in others. He would be kind in listening to others and possessed immense patience. Whenever someone would come to him with his complaints at any time of the day, he would be the one to listen patiently and bring clarity to their thoughts. The reason he had so much patience was that he used to practice meditation for at least one hour a day.
He would say that selfish people never sleep in peace on a daily basis. They have so much of worries and stress in their lives because they act selfishly. However, according to him, selflessness allowed him to enjoy each day of their life and also help him lead a patient life. Volunteering in religious events was one of his weekend activities.
His children followed his path of selflessness and always helped others in terms of learning in schools and colleges. Even they enjoyed the process of helping others and helping themselves in the process. Selflessness came in their blood it seems. It is how they were brought up that helped them become good leaders and doers in society.
So think about the concept of selflessness. Do you think it will cost you anything more if you help your colleague or friend in life’s journey? Nothing major goes from your bank account or property if you utilize your time well and give a lending hand to others who are in deep trouble. You never know how your kind acts will come to you back in the long run. Thus, more people should join the act of selflessness and make society a good place to live in.
