Investor Relations or IR is a strategic management work that is able to combine various functions such as communication, marketing, finance, securities, law, etc. to ensure that there is a healthy relationship between the company and its stakeholders that also includes the financial investors. Investor Relations comes as a sub-part of the Public Relations domain that involves communication processes of the company with its investors, shareholders, the financial community, and government officials among others.

As part of the investor relationship management, the manager or the person appointed to handle this IR department or division in the company provides accurate information about the company matters to its investors. This helps the investors that can be in the form of private and institutional ones to take the right and informed decisions on whether they should go ahead in investing in the company or not.

Investor Relations teams are usually given the responsibility to co-ordinate shareholder meetings and organize press conferences, manage media relations, release financial information, give briefings to the financial analysts, publish reports that are of vital nature and also manage the company’s public side to keep them updated about any financial challenges faced by the firm. The Investor Relations department usually has to be in close coordination with the company’s finance, legal, and management departments that also including the chief operating office, chief executive officer, and chief financial officer.

The investor relations department has to be updated about the changes that come in regulatory needs and keep the company advised about what should be and what should not be done from the perspective of public relations. For example, the investor relations department has to guide the company’s management and employees during its financial crisis on what they should not reveal about the company’s performance to the public and the media as well.

The main role of the investor relations department is to bring about an understanding of the organization among the investor community. It also handles the assistance of listed companies to get more capital, reach liquidity in the industry and also acquire a fair company valuation. Investors are managed by this department and play a very important role in the success and development of the organization.

Investor relations involve keeping a strong relationship and maintaining transparency with the investors. Some of the objectives of professionals working in the investor relations domain are enabling the company to get the maximum share price so that gets shown as the main value of the company.

Acting as a representative from the company to inform investors and also represent the investors to the company. Providing financial and non-financial data in a timely manner to support the valuations of the company also is an important role. Collecting feedback from the investors and presenting it to the top management also is vital for the company’s growth. Maintaining cordial relations with the media and public about the company’s progress, growth plans, etc. also becomes an important part of the investor relations division.
