What is Inner Compulsion?

Concept of the DayWhat is Inner Compulsion?

Date:

Inner compulsion is an extremely strong feeling of wanting to do something again and again which is just too challenging to control. Inner compulsion comes from a desire to do something in life that is different from what the person has been doing to date. For example, Rhea had a strong liking for painting and used to feel enchanted whenever she saw colored boxes in the shops. She used to watch videos where artists drew and painted with minimal things in their homes. But unfortunately, Rhea was not allowed to follow her passion for painting because her family was full of mathematics scholars who wanted Rhea to follow the same profession.

Of thwarted desire, misogyny and erasure

One day Rhea had to confess to her dad that she wanted to paint and draw since she was 10 years old but she never expressed the desire because she never wanted to hurt her parents. But as she is no more interested in becoming a mathematics scholar, her inner compulsion made her switch to the Arts stream and join a visual-arts school. Her parents were really disheartened by Rhea’s confession but they made up their minds when Rhea put up an exhibition of her latest drawings and paintings in her school and her teachers remarked that it is one of the best art forms they have seen so far.

Walter Gropius once said, Only work which is the product of inner compulsion can have spiritual meaning. This statement is indeed true because inner compulsion makes a person connect all their senses to the work that they do. It is the positive energy from within that a person gives when they are doing any work, which gives the work receive a lot of attention and acknowledgment. For example, many well-known actors and actresses had a longing to act on the big screen since their childhood which made them leave their well-paying professions and switch to acting on the screen.

Take, for example, Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar had done a Master in Management and also worked in the corporate sector in a well-paying position. However, his inner compulsion to act on the big screen, made him quit his job and follow his passion for acting. Shankar Mahadevan who is a well-known musician also left his good job and started composing and singing songs. These are a few examples of celebrities who had different professions than their current ones and how they followed their hearts and made it big in the film industry.

Another example of inner compulsion is of spiritual gurus who are born in common households with common parents. However, their true calling to abandon their families and luxuries and start walking on the spiritual path is what amazes many. This is because of the inner compulsion that doesn’t allow them to lead mediocre lives and makes them want to grasp the knowledge and wisdom that they attain following the spiritual journey. Thus, inner compulsion cannot be noted in a negative way because once one follows their passion or true calling, they really make great people that serve the planet.
