What is Gandhism?

Concept of the DayWhat is Gandhism?

Date:

Gandhism is based on the life of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, also known as M.K. Gandhi or Gandhiji or Mahatma Gandhi, or Bapuji. Gandhism is a category of ideas that explains how Gandhiji lived and visualized the country of India and overall life. It is related to the ideas of non-violence, kindness, compassion, and patience, among others. Civil resistance, means the people have to be adopting non-violent methods to challenge the power of the government or a particular group that is working against the people’s welfare.

Gandhism is usually referred to as a way or philosophy of life in which people follow Gandhi’s ideas, actions, words, and quotes in developing their own future. A person is called Gandhian if he is found following the ideal values mentioned by Gandhiji or following Gandhism. However, if you had read about Gandhi’s views on Gandhism, it is something that he didn’t accept as a term.

Gandhiji had said once, “There is no such thing as “Gandhism” and I do not want to leave any sect after me. I do not claim to have originated any new principle or doctrine. I have simply tried in my own way to apply the eternal truths to our daily life and problems…The opinions I have formed and the conclusions I have arrived at are not final. I may change them tomorrow. I have nothing new to teach the world. Truth and non-violence are as old as the hills.”

Truth and non-violence are the main values that Gandhiji followed all his life. People who trust Gandhiji’s ideals always accept the fact that people are different at all levels, and another fact is that people should avoid using violence if there are any differences with other human beings at any level, it can be between two people or two communities or two nations.

Gandhiji described that he took inspiration from the Hindu religion and the sacred book Bhagavad Gita. He was quoted saying that for him, Hinduism satisfies his soul and fulfills his whole being. Whenever he is in doubt, or disappointments appear in his life, or when he finds himself in darkness, he turns to read the book of Bhagavad Gita, which helps him to feel comfortable and also brings a smile in times of deep sorrow. His life has been full of tragedies, and if they have not to turn affected him badly, then it is because of the teachings that he learned from the book Bhagavad Gita.

People who follow Gandhism usually say that his life’s works are all related to the lessons from the Bhagavad Gita, wherein Lord Krishna helps Arjuna to fight for justice from his cousin brothers during the Kurukshetra War. It is not just Gandhiji who benefitted by following Gandhism during the freedom movement of India but also several political figures such as Martin Luther King Jr. of the United States, Julius Nyerere of Tanzania, Nelson Mandela and Steve Biko of South Africa, Lech WaÅ‚Ä™sa of Poland and Aung San Suu Kyi of Myanmar used Gandhiji’s philosophy of in-depth commitment and disciplined beliefs in non-violent civil disobedience to fight the oppression and injustice to themselves and their nations.
