Date:

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is all set to visit Japan from 19th May to 21st May 2023 to be a part of the G-7 Summit, which is being conducted under the Japanese Presidency.

PM Modi chaired a high-level meeting amid COVID tension

The summit will be held in Hiroshima, the first time that a G-7 summit has been held in a city that was the victim of an atomic bomb attack.

During the G-7 summit, Modi will talk about vital subjects alongside partner nations on the importance of peace, stability, and sustainable prosperity for the planet Earth. The discussions will also cover topics like food, fertilizer, energy security, gender equality, healthcare, climate change and environmental concerns, resilient infrastructure, and development cooperation.

Modi’s participation in the G-7 summit is a sign of India’s growing importance on the world stage. India is a rising power, and its economy is expected to become the third largest in the world by 2030. Modi’s presence at the summit will give India a platform to share its views on global issues and build relationships with other world leaders.

Modi will also be a part of the bilateral meeting with different leaders who are going to attend the summit. He is also likely to discuss India’s efforts to combat climate change.

Modi’s visit to Japan is a significant event for India. It is an opportunity for India to strengthen its ties with a key ally and to play a more active role in global affairs.

After his visit to Japan, Modi will also go to Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, where he plans to co-host the third Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC III Summit) alongside Prime Minister James Marape of Papua New Guinea on 22nd May 2023.

Modi has visited Japan many times since the time he has become Prime Minister in 2014. In 2016, Modi visited Japan to attend the G-20 summit. In 2018, Modi visited Japan to attend the annual summit of the India-Japan Business Leaders Forum.

Modi’s bond with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida is quite strong and healthy. The two leaders have met various times since Kishida became Prime Minister in 2021. In 2022, Modi visited Japan to attend the Quad Summit.

Japan is the present president of the Group of Seven G-7 Summit and plans to play an important part in allowing for discussions with the G-7 ministers on climate, energy, and the environment. The agenda is to facilitate stability in the energy supply, especially during the crisis times in Ukraine along with increasing decarbonization initiatives.

In the last year, the G-7 leading countries talked about the idea of phasing out coal-fired power generation by 2030. But due to strong disapproval from Japan, the initiative did not get a particular timeline for the change process.

The minister participating in G7 Summit will also work on the plans to attain the goal of reducing global temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius, which is above the pre-Industrial Revolution levels. They will also discuss the rising power of China to increasing war-like situations in Ukraine.

The core G-7 members in the summit include Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States, European Union. Invited guests of the G-7 Summit include Australia, Brazil, Comoros Cook Islands, India, Indonesia, South Korea, Ukraine, and Vietnam.

This year’s summit will be the first summit for British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
