NASA Begins Testing Electric Taxis

Under NASA’s Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) National Campaign, Joby Aviation has begun flight testing electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft for air taxi services.  As part of the AAM National Campaign, NASA is testing an eVTOL aircraft for the first time. eVTOL planes might one day act as air taxis for cities and their surrounding areas, providing yet another means of transportation for people and cargo.

This test will identify holes in current FAA laws and procedures that will aid in the integration of AAM aircraft into the National Airspace System. Over several years, this multi-event campaign took place in numerous places. The AAM National Campaign will use that data to prepare for the first round of campaign testing, known as NC-1, which will occur in 2022 and include more complicated flying scenarios and other industrial vehicles.

The NASA crew will gather data on how the Joby aircraft moves, sounds, and communicates with controllers as it flies through pre-planned test scenarios. Similar scenarios will be flown in the future to assess vehicle readiness.

NASA’s test includes creating a baseline to verify that external ranges participating in NC-1 comply with future testing standards. AAM will provide an efficient and inexpensive system for passenger and freight transportation and other public-interest uses, once wholly integrated into the national airspace, NASA stated. Package delivery drones, air taxis, and medical transport vehicles may all be part of this system.

AAM is an aviation system that entails creating and deploying aircraft in novel methods not seen before. NASA’s Advanced Air Mobility project is in charge of the AAM National Campaign, which aims to be a community catalyst for generating and verifying system-level concepts and solutions for AAM. The Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate of the agency oversees the AAM project.
