Chandigarh: IFFCO has increased the odds on farmers by unexpectedly increasing the prices of DAP fertilizer. According to the increased prices from April 1, a 50 kg bag of DAP fertilizer has been increased from Rs 1200 to Rs 1900. Four varieties of 50 kg per bag of nitrogen phosphorus potassium (NPK) have been priced from Rs 1350 to Rs 1800. The distribution margin of the distributors will be Rs 480 per ton as before.
There is widespread anger among farmers in Punjab and Haryana about the increased prices of fertilizers. Balbir Singh Rajewal, president of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Rajewal), says that the Modi government, which has increased the MSP by just Rs 50 to 70 a quintal, has done the job of breaking the back of farmers by increasing the price of fertilizer by Rs 700 per bag. He said that this is the biggest increase in fertilizer prices so far. This increase has come at a time when farmers have struggled on the borders of Delhi to withdraw the three agricultural laws of the Center for more than four months. The government has also stopped further talks with the farmers and put the path of reconciliation in cold storage.
