At a time when prices of all essential commodities are going through the roof, breaking the back of the common man, milk prices have shot up by Rs 2 a kg. This is the second hike in milk prices in the past two months.

New Delhi: Milk is all to take the fat off your wallet, and that, too, at a time when the prices of all essential items are going through the roof, breaking the back of the common man. After Amul announced a hike in milk prices on Saturday, another dairy major Mother Dairy raised prices by Rs 2 a litre on full cream and cow milk variants, which is effective from Sunday (October16).

According to a spokesperson of Mother Dairy, the company has been forced to hike the milk prices because of a multi-fold hike in varied input costs. He said that continuous hikes in fodder prices and below average rainfall in a few northern states have made the situation critical for milk producers.

He said, “We are, therefore, compelled to revise the prices to support farmers and to ensure availability of quality milk for consumers.”

Earlier in the day, the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), selling milk and milk products under the brand name Amul, increased the prices of milk by Rs 2 a kg. The price of full cream milk has shot up from Rs 61 to Rs 63 a kg. Both Amul and Mother Dairy increased milk prices in August. Therefore, it was the second hike in prices in the past two months.
