Lawmakers are trying to figure out how to reduce the dangers and risks that can be caused by the emerging Artificial Intelligence technology. Of late, there has been a boom in investment and widespread use of AI among consumers, particularly after the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT and one cannot forget the free version of Google’s Bard.
Lawmakers are trying their level best to reduce fake news, dangerous information with regard to elections, and also how to control the attacks on critical and sensitive infrastructure.

In April this year, it was reported how Schumer spoke with Musk with regard to AI and wanted to have a session with the top leaders about why Congress must act, what questions need to be asked, and how to build a consensus for safe innovation.
In March this year, one must note how the top leader Musk who is known to have a bold approach along with other AI experts and executives asked for a six-month break in developing systems that are quite more effective and powerful than OpenAI’s GPT-4 saying that the more advancements can lead to potential threats and harm to society.
To discuss this matter, recently, Congress organized three separate hearings on AI. Microsoft President Brad Smith told a Senate Judiciary subcommittee on Tuesday Congress should “require safety brakes for AI that controls or manages critical infrastructure.”
Smith compared AI safeguards to the need for circuit breakers in buildings, school buses having emergency brakes, and airplanes including collision avoidance systems.
Elon Musk in the meeting warned of civilizational risks posed by Artificial Intelligence. Google’s Sundar Pichai also mentioned how the technology’s potential to solve health and energy issues. Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg also noted the importance of open and transparent A.I. systems.
In the three-hour meeting, the tech titans discussed with lawmakers in Washington about the role of A.I. and future regulations. The gathering which is also called A.I. Insight Forum was organized by the Senate leader, Chuck Schumer, Democrat of New York.
The meeting — also attended by Bill Gates, a founder of Microsoft; Sam Altman of OpenAI; Satya Nadella of Microsoft; and Jensen Huang of Nvidia — was a rare combination of more than a dozen top tech leaders in the same room.
Mr. Pichai called the event “productive”, and he stressed the importance of the government balancing the “innovation side and building the right safeguards.”
