The lockdown has caused a lot of grief for everyone. The latest is producer Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Reports has come that if he demolishes the set of Gangubai Kathiawadi, it can lead to huge losses. It is to the tune of Rs 15 crore. It seems they do not have another way out as the set is lying unused in this lockdown because of the pandemic. Sanjay Leela Bhansali built a huge set to recreate the old world of Kamathipura. It is based in the 1960’s. It seems the makers are paying huge bills to keep the set intact. Gangubai Kathiawadi was supposed to release on September 11, 2020 and the set is in Goregaon’s Film City area. While earlier reports suggested that the makers planned to demolish it, now it looks like the decision is a final one. There is complete uncertainty on when things will resume. Moreover, the monsoons are coming and set will get ruined anyways. A trade expert told media, “It’s a good decision on his part because it’s still unclear if the shoot will begin anytime soon. The producers are still paying daily rent for the set to Film City. They have now calculated that even if the shoot resumes somewhere around September-October as is being discussed, it will be a more practical call to demolish the set now and create a similar one again.” The person said that the estimated loss is around Rs 15 crore. The source further said, “It would be a smaller loss compared to if they continued to keep this set. Monsoons will hit the set bad and it will anyway get destroyed. So paying regular rent is not feasible. Constructing a new set is what still seems to be a better option here. The set is huge, and reflects Kamathipura from the ’60s so it will take another Rs 12-13 crore to build it again. The remaining Rs 2 crore is the sum that the makers have lost because of the lockdown and the Coronavirus outbreak.” Gangubai Kathiawadi is based on the lady don of Kamathipura in the 1960’s.
