Election Commission reduces election campaign ban on Himanta Biswa Sarma

New Delhi: The Election Commission has reduced the term of the election campaign ban on Assam government minister and BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma from 48 hours to 24 hours. His campaigning on Friday was banned until April 4 for allegedly threatening remarks against Hagrama Mohilari, the head of the Bodoland People’s Front. The campaigning for the third and final phase of the Assam Assembly elections will end on the evening of April 4. The last phase of elections will be held on April 6.

A letter issued to Himanta Biswa Sarma by the Election Commission informed him about the decision. The letter said, “In your representation, you have, interalia, requested to “accept my sincere regret and assurance of abiding MCC in future, and. be further pleased to reduce the period of debarment from election campaign from 48 hours to 24 hours”.
