Lucknow: With UP assembly elections around the corner, political parties are trying their level best to cross the magical majority mark to enter UP Vidhan Sabha. Political parties from BJP to Congress are wooing the voters with freebies in the state. Congress party in quest to revive its political fortune has announced many freebies along with 40 percent tickets to females in UP polls.

Congress, General Secretary, Priyanka Gandhi has gone one step ahead in announcing the pre poll freebies by offering free medical insurance of Rs.10 lakh. Earlier, she has made seven promises during the flag off ceremony of the party’s “Pratigya Yatra” in Barabanki district. Starting from the loan waiver to farmers and jobs promises to 20 lakh people. She has also promised purchase of wheat and paddy at Rs 2,500/quintal and sugarcane at Rs. 400/quintal.

Congress went ahead with its long list of promises, ranging from reducing electricity bill to half and providing financial support of Rs 25,000 to families who faced financial crunch during COVID-19. She has also promised a free smartphone to 12th pass female students and electronic scooter to graduates, along with 40 percent seats for female candidates in 2022 UP elections.

However, offering freebies to voters can’t guarantee the political revival of the grand old party. Since, Congress has lost its wider support and its voter base in the last 30 years, to regional parties like Samajwadi Party and BSP.

Meanwhile Priyanka Gandhi through her new strategy is trying to regain the old voter base, it used to enjoy 30 years ago till 80s in UP.  Whereas, BJP has been successful in retaining its near 40% vote share in UP since 2014 General elections in UP till 2019.

According to senior political analyst RM Lal, “Congress under the leadership of Priyanka is comparatively stronger than earlier with revamped organization. But it doesn’t have the intensity to change the political landscape of the state with just 6.25 percent vote share.
