Hospitals are also instructed that even if the mother is infected with or likely to have Covid-19, the health workers should ensure that the baby is fed breast milk in the first hour of birth, following all the hygiene standards. Encourage for breastfeeding till child is six months old. Apart from this, if the child is ill and is infected with or likely to be Covid-19, the mother should continue to feed him with full precautions.Dr. Deepa Tyagi, Chief Medical Superintendent of the District Women’s Hospital, says that the corona virus is not found in breast milk, but is spread through droplets and aerosels while coughing or sneezing. If the mother pays careful attention to her hygiene behavior, the infection can be avoided during breastfeeding.

Feeding yellow thick milk to the child within one hour of birth is also necessary because it is the first vaccine that can protect children from many diseases such as corona. In addition, breast milk contains antibodies which increase the immunity of the child and those who have strong immunity can be easily protected from corona.
For the first six months, the baby should be given only breast milk as it is the complete diet for him. During this time, nothing should be given from outside except breast milk, not even water, because it is prone to infection.

Wear masks during breastfeeding:

If the mother feels fever, cough or difficulty in breathing during the changing season, then she should breastfeed the baby with full caution. In such a situation, the child should be breastfeed only by wearing a mask. Cover your mouth with a handkerchief or tissue while coughing and sneezing. After sneezing and coughing, wash your hands with soap and water for 40 seconds and before and after feeding your baby as well. Before touching any surface, clean it thoroughly with soap or sanitizer.

In case of incapacity, give mother’s milk in the bowl to child:

If the mother is not in a position to breastfeed, she can feed the baby by wearing a mask, taking her milk out in a clean bowl and using a clean cup or spoon. For this, it is necessary to be very careful that before giving your milk, wash hands thoroughly with soap and water, the bowl or cup in which milk will be giving must be washed with soap and water. After this, give milk only with a well cleaned cup or spoon.If the situation is very serious, the help of another woman can also be taken for feeding and caring for the baby.

Take care of full diet of child older than six months:

District Program Officer Shashi Varshney says that breastfeeding older than six months should be started along with supplementary feeding as it is a time of their physical and mental development. During this time, pulses, milk, milk products, seasonal fruits and green vegetables should be given. If you do not get fresh fruits or vegetables during lock down, then use other food items, just take care that every child’s food is full of nutrition.
