Modi government schemes reduced employment!

Date:

New Delhi: Even though the government is making claims to increase employment opportunities through all its schemes, it does not appear to be happening. According to the data presented in Parliament by the government itself, the employment generation figures from government schemes may be lower this year than in the previous financial year.

The central government’s flagship schemes for employment generation, the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Program (PMEGP) and the National Urban Livelihood Mission, do not see the expected results.

According to data presented by Union Labor and Employment Minister Santosh Gangwar, 5.9 lakh employment opportunities were generated from government schemes in 2018-19, while in the current financial year, this figure had reached 2.6 lakh as on 31 December. It is clear that it is not possible to reach the level of last year by the remaining 3 months i.e. March. Talking about 2017-18, 3.9 lakh people got employment from government schemes.

Actually, the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Scheme is not a direct employment scheme. It is a credit linked subsidy program, operated by the Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprises.

With the help of Khadi Village Industries Commission, the number of employments received through this scheme is the lowest since 2014 in the current financial year.

Talking about the National Urban Livelihood Mission, 1.8 million people were employed under this scheme in the financial year 2018-19, but now only 44,000 people have been benefited according to the data till January this year.

Under the Prime Minister Employment Generation Scheme, in 2017-18, 1,15,416 people were given employment opportunities, while in 2016-17 the figure was 1,51,901. The biggest decline in the number of beneficiaries of this scheme has come in Assam and Jammu and Kashmir. Apart from this, in the case of National Urban Livelihood Mission, its performance is the weakest in Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh.
