The rapid strides in innovation and more personalized, customized learning which helps an individual cope with his learning needs as opposed to a generic learning formula is due to technology and the role it has played over the years.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is therefore such a wonderful enabler to bring in not only cost-effective learning solutions but also efficiency in time management and more importantly the access to information that was previously not possible.
Learning therefore in the digital age can be a huge advantage if treated with maturity and the right dosage.
I have already mentioned that AI can bring about customization — children now can go back, and revisit the ‘steps’ or the ‘process’ as opposed to staring at their textbooks at home to conclude their homework but completely forgetting what the teacher told them.
They can ‘retrace’ the steps with ease, which makes home-work so much more effective because this is self-corrective by getting the children to help themselves when lessons are available also as a reference online. I am more interested in the diagnostic aspect — the intel that helps us as teachers understand where the child was going wrong, what did the child not understand, or what this child forever seems to stumble when it comes to the last paragraph, so what can I do in a class to help him decode it. This information helps the whole exercise of differentiation for teachers, and makes teaching more directed and importantly learning that happens with understanding.
I also believe that the digital space allows us to access the world beyond the neighborhood that the school operates, connecting to students and teachers within the country and oversees while in the comfort of your classroom.
Virtual classrooms are the future and using augmented reality, students can get into the National History Museum in England and learn about their history as they would have visited Mount Fiji through the lenses, as they would have visited Japan or the Great Wall of China to understand dimensions and proportions.
The digital world makes an effort to customize and makes a strong case for the world to come together as one, and surely allow accessibility.
