After 24 years of artist’s death, Lucknow hospital asked to pay relief

Date:

Lucknow: Twenty-four years have passed since eminent painter and Padma Shri Award-winning painter Ranbir Singh Bisht died. But the Uttar Pradesh State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission slapped a fine of Rs 39 lakh on the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) only a few days ago, sources said on Wednesday. The commission said that the artist had died because of faulty treatment. According to the order of the commission, Bisht had been a patient of angina since 1986 and was admitted to SGPGI on September 2, 1998. He breathed his last on September 25 in the hospital.

The daughter of the artist, Pushpita Bisht, filed a petition at the consumer court, alleging that her father had died because of wrong treatment provided by the doctors. In the petition, she also said that the patient had not been given proper treatment, besides his pacemaker was also removed without the family members’ consent. Nevertheless, the SGPGI contended that negligence was not the reason for the artist’s death, but the explanations did not satisfy the court comprising Rajendra Singh, Sushil Kumar and Vikas Saxena. Therefore, they issued the order.
