Girl raped, burnt in Bulandshahr district of UP, dies in Delhi hospital

There seems to be no end in sight to crime against women in Uttar Pradesh. After the rape and murder of two Dalit sisters in Lakhimpurkheri, another girl was raped and burnt. She died in a hospital in Delhi. Initially, the police said that the girl had tried to commit suicide by setting herself afire. This was the fifth incident in the past one week.

Bulandshahr: There seems to be no end in sight to attack on women in Uttar Pradesh. After two minor Dalit sisters were raped and murdered in Lakhimpurkheri and one has been raped and set afire in Pilibhit district of Uttar Pradesh, another girl was violated and burnt in Bulandshahr district of the state.

The Bulandshahr girl died in a hospital and the from Pilibhit is still undergoing treatment at the hospital, the police said on Monday. According to reports, the uncle of the rapist set the girl afire when she refused to reach a compromise in a court.

The family members of the girl said that they were being threatened by the friends of the accused for not settling the case. The girl’s father lodged an FIR saying that the kin of the rapist sprinkled petrol on her and set her afire, the police said. A case was registered against seven persons under various sections of the Indian Penal Code

According to senior superintendent of police Santosh Kumar, two policemen were suspended for not doing their duty in connection with the case. Nevertheless, immediately after the incident, the police said that the girl had tried to set herself on fire. On August 15, the girl lodged a complaint stating that a guard in a mango orchard in her village had raped her. The guard concerned had been arrested, the police said.
