Bid to whip up communal frenzy in Kanwar Yatra foiled, man held

Lucknow/Meerut/Bijnor: An anti-social element tried to whip up communal passion during the Kanwar Yatra in Meerut on Monday. But before the incident could descend into a major violence, the police plunged into action and arrested the man, sources said. Kanwariyas alleged that a person had defiled the pitchers in which they were carrying the holy water of the Ganga to offer to Lord Shiva in the month of Sawan. No sooner had the person tried to stoke rumpus than a large number of Kanwariyas gathered at the spot. Meanwhile, the police came to know of it and brought the situation under control by arresting the accused.

A report from Lucknow says that UP Police have begun to keep a vigil on the routes of Kanwar Yatra with the help of choppers. The annual Kanwar Yatra is being organised after two years because of the covid-19 pandemic. Additional director general of police (law and order) Prashant Kumar has said that the choppers are covering mainly three routes the Meerut-Shaharanpur-Bagpat route, Ayodhya to Basti and Prayagraj to Varanasi routes. He has also said that drones are being used to check the routes and the policemen on duty have body-worn cameras.

Kumar further said that the incidents indicated that there was a conspiracy to stoke communal violence during Kanwar Yatra and that continuous social monitoring is underway.
