After dissolving units, Akhilesh launches membership drive

Date:

Lucknow: The Samajwadi Party (SP) seems to have realised – after its defeat in the recently held Lok Sabha by-elections in Rampur and Azamarh – that it is necessary to strengthen the party at the grassroots. SP president Akhilesh Yadav courted criticism from the party as well as from the family because of the organisation’s show in the by-polls, because the party had won the two seats in the 2019 general elections.

Immediately after the by-poll results were out, Yadav dissolved the party’s units to induct youths into the organisation. Likewise, he launched a drive for inducting more members into the party on Tuesday.  At the membership drive campaign,

the SP president said that the party workers would reach out to the rural areas to enrol members and spread the party’s policies. Such membership drivers will take place in other states where the organisation has its units, Yadav said.

Political observers say that the drive is for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. “Our party leaders and those who have contested elections will lead the membership drive. I will also go to villages. There is a need to expand our base and save democracy,” he said.

The party would be rebuilt after the membership drive. The SP president had recently dissolved all party units including executive bodies, wings, and frontal organisations. Yadav also said that instead of talking about its achievements in 100 days, the Yogi Adityanath government should talk about its work in the past five years and 100 days.
