Suspension can be revoked only if members regret their conduct: Naidu
New Delhi: Vice President and Chairman of Rajya Sabha Venkaiah Naidu has said that the suspension of 19 members can be revoked only if they express regret for their reported unruly behaviour in the House. He made the remark on Wednesday when the leaders of many opposition parties met Naidu and urged him to revoke the suspension of the members who were suspended from the Upper House on Tuesday. Earlier, four Congress members were suspended from the House when they demanded a discussion on price rise and other issues carrying placards in the Lok Sabha.
According to reports, ten leaders of various opposition parties met Naidu in his chamber and demanded a discussion on price rise. Those who met Naidu were Mallikarjun Kharge, KC Venugopal, Ram Gopal Yadav, Derek O’Brien, Tiruchi Siva, Sanjay Raut, Elamaram Kareem, Binoy Viswam, Suresh Reddy and Vaiko.

They said that as the number of suspended members was very high, the suspension should be immediately revoked. Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Prahlad Joshi, leader of the House Piyush Goyal and minister of state for Parliamentary Affairs Muraleedharan also took part in the discussion the opposition leaders held with Naidu. Sources further said that the price rise issue might be taken up for discussion next week. Naidu told the opposition leaders that as many as 63 opposition members of Lok Sabha were suspended in 1989 and 25 in 2015.
