New Delhi: The Congress leaders and Union minister Smiriti Irani locked horns over Saturday over an illegal bar that Smirit Irani’s daughter allegedly runs in Goa.

The Congress on Saturday demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should sack Union Minister Smriti Irani, alleging that an “illegal bar” was being run in Goa by her daughter, who rejected the charge.

The party, however, did not mention the name of Irani’s daughter saying that it does not belong the Congress’s culture to mention the name of somebody who is not in politics.

In a statement, the lawyer of Irani’s daughter, Kirat Nagra, said his client is neither an owner nor operating the restaurant called Silly Souls Goa, and has also not received any show-cause notice from any authority whatsoever as alleged, the agency reports say.

Nagra said various “erroneous, frivolous, malicious and defamatory social media posts being made by various vested quarters trying to settle political scores with our client's mother, the renowned politician Smriti Irani each of which are predicated on blatant falsities''.

Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera told reporters that there were serious charges of corruption against Irani’s family and her daughter is allegedly running a restaurant in Goa, in which a bar is functioning on a “fake licence.”

At a press conference, former Union minister Jairam Ramesh and Kheda said, “The licence by Smriti Irani's daughter is in the name of a person who died in May 2021, and the licence was taken in June 2022 in Goa. But the person in whose name the licence is, had died 13 months ago. This is illegal.”

They said that they got the papers related to the bar through the Right to Information Act (RTI) and distributed those documents among reporters who were present at the press conference. Kheda said according to Goa rules, a restaurant can get only one bar licence but this restaurant has got two bar licences.

They said, “We demand from the prime minister that Smriti Irani should be immediately sacked as a minister from the Union cabinet. You owe it to this country, to the youth of this country,” he said.

They said there was a difference between running a bar and running a newspaper.  Both Ramesh and Kheda wanted to know whether the bar was being run without her knowledge. They also quoted an incident of December 12, 2004 when Irani sought the then Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s resignation.

Meanwhile, Irani slammed the Congress saying the party was unnecessarily dragging the name of her daughter because she criticised Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi for “loot” in National Herald case. The charges are baseless and she would go to court, Irani said.
