New Delhi: Former captain of Hockey India (HI), Dilip Tirkey, was elected as president of HI on Friday, official sources said. Tirkey, a member of the team that won the gold medal in the 1998 Asian Games, played a record 412 international matches in his career.  The 44-year-old player from Odisha represented India at the 1996 Atlanta, 200 Sydney and 2004 Athens Olympics.

According to the deadline set by the Federation of International Hockey (FIH), the election process of HI was scheduled for October 9 and that of the Committee of Administrators (CoA) last month. Before Tirkey had been elected president, HI was under the jurisdiction of CoA after Delhi High Court’s order. It happened because of National Sports Code violation, sources further said.

In a tweet, Tirkey thanked the COA and its members for electing as HI president. The FIH also congratulated Tirkey for his election as HI chief.
