Official sources said that an altercation over installation of an Idol of Hanuman on government land in the Old Kachahri area in the city triggered  communal clashes. The Congress leaders said that Neemuch comes under Ujjain division and the party did very well in this part of the state by winning 12 seats out of 29, while the BJP got 16 and independent one.

According to opposition leaders, one of the most important reasons for the communal clashes in Khargone is that the Bharatiya Janata Party has lost their ground in that district and its adjoining areas in recent years. Consequently, the party lost nine out of ten seats in the region in the assembly elections of 2018, official records say.
