3 of family set themselves afire, couple dies, daughter in hospital

Chhindwara (MP): Three members of a family, including an elderly couple and their daughter, set themselves afire because of financial problems at Balaji Nagar in Chhindwara district of Madhya Pradesh at 4:30 am on Saturday, the police said.  The 70-year-old man and his wife died. Their daughter may survive. In trying to save the family members, the couple’s son sustained severe injuries, in charge of  Kundipura police station Rakesh Bharti said.

According to him, when the police rushed to the spot, they found 70-year-old Vinod Pathak had already died. His 60-year-old wife Kanchan, 28-year-old son Prateek and daughter 24-year-old Aparna were writhing in pain because of the burns they had sustained. Kanchan died in the hospital and Aparna was critical, he said. Locals told police that Vinod, Kanchan and Aparna poured kerosene and set themselves afire. Vinod was a retired employee of a cooperative bank and the family was facing financial problems, he said. The police are talking to Prateek to know the truth behind the tragedy.
