Keeping MLA Azam Khan in jail is strangulation of justice: Mayawati
She also tears into BJP for atrocities on Muslims, Dalits, poor
Lucknow : A long time has passed since former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh Mayawati strongly spoke against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). She has come out in support of Samajwadi Party leader and MLA from Rampur Azam Khan who has been in jail for nearly two and a half years on several charges, including corruption.
Khan was once considered a political adversary of president of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) Mayawati. She tweeted on Thursday that the common man is treating his imprisonment for several years as ‘strangulation of justice.’ Her sudden tweets in favour of Khan have surprised many politicians in the state.
Besides supporting Khan, she tore into the ruling party for reportedly targeting the poor, Dalits, tribal people, Muslims and the opponents. According to her tweets, the Muslims are being harassed and attacked in the BJP-ruled states.
“In this sequence, the matter of continuous hateful and terror (like) action by the UP government on its opponents and keeping senior MLA Mohammad Azam Khan in jail for about two and a half years is in the news which, in the eyes of the people, if not strangulating justice, then what is it?” she said.
Although Khan has got bail in 88 cases out of 89, he will be in in jail unless he gets rid of the last case. Nonetheless, the BSP supremo’s tweets in favour of Khan have ruffled the SP, as many politicians in UP believe that the chasm between the SP and Khan is widening with each passing day.
