Five-time councillor Rakesh Prashar, along with a few other former councillors and district unit office bearers, joined the Aam Aadmi Party on Thursday, dealing a blow to the Congress party in the Ludhiana central seat ahead of the assembly elections .
AAP state president and chief ministerial face Bhagwant Mann welcomed the leaders into the party in Chandigarh.

Following a quarrel with current Congress MLA, Surinder Dawar, Prashar left the party. The latter had previously filed a complaint with district party president Ashwani Sharma, alleging that the five-time councillor was secretly campaigning for his brother Ashok Prashar Pappi, who had joined AAP in October last year before being named as the party’s candidate for the central constituency.
Parshar said his decision to switch parties was prompted by Dawar’s constant levelling of unfounded claims against him.

Prashar resigned after being warned of disciplinary action for his anti-party activities, according to the district Congress president. He went on to say that both Prashar and Pappi joined AAP in 2016 and then returned to Congress after the latter was refused a party ticket in 2017, and that their departure will have no impact on the party’s chances in the constituency.
