Colombo: Former president of Sri Lanka Gotabaya Rajapaksa who fled from the country following people’s protest against his failure to deal with the economic crisis is likely to return from Singapore, sources said on Tuesday. The president had to flee on July 9, because the people stormed the presidential house.

Immediately after leaving the country, Rajapaksa took refuge in the Maldives, but left for Singapore the next day. According to a government spokesperson, the former president was not in hiding and he may return from Singapore. The spokesperson, also a minister, said he the former president did not run away from the country or he was in hiding. Meanwhile, sources in the Sri Lankan cabinet said that Singapore had granted a fortnight visit pass to Gotabaya. The island nation has not seen such a crisis since 1948.
