A 19-year-old man has been arrested in Illinois after police uncovered an alleged mass shooting plot that investigators believe may have targeted a Hindu place of worship in the Aurora area.
The suspect, identified as Alexandros Paporakis of Palatine, was arrested on October 11 following an investigation triggered by concerning electronic communications reported to police.
Authorities said investigators recovered a rifle, loaded magazines, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, body armour and material displaying white supremacist imagery from his residence. They also found an alleged manifesto containing extremist statements and references to violence against people of South Asian heritage, particularly those of Indian descent.
Suspect Ordered Detained
Paporakis appeared for a detention hearing on Wednesday at the Cook County Third Municipal District Courthouse in Rolling Meadows, where a judge ordered that he remain in custody.
His next court appearance is scheduled for October 30.
He faces one count of making a terrorist threat and one count of unlawful possession of a weapon, involving a rifle with a barrel shorter than 16 inches.
The charges are allegations, and Paporakis is entitled to the presumption of innocence unless convicted.
Police Alerted by Concerning Messages
The investigation began after the Mount Prospect Police Department received information from an individual who said they had received concerning electronic communications from Paporakis.
Police said he had allegedly shared a document describing plans for a mass shooting, along with images of a rifle, magazines, body armour and other tactical equipment.
Mount Prospect police subsequently contacted the Palatine Police Department, which began investigating the potential threat.
Alleged Manifesto Referenced Indians and White Supremacist Ideology
Investigators examined a document attributed to Paporakis titled “Why I Fought: A.K.A.: (Aurora Shooter’s Manifesto)”.
According to police, the document contained statements expressing white supremacist and extremist views, including references to violence against people of South Asian heritage and particularly people of Indian descent.
Authorities said the material was among the evidence that led investigators to believe Paporakis may have been preparing to carry out an attack.
Hindu Place of Worship in Aurora Was Possible Target
Palatine police said investigators believe Paporakis may have been planning an attack on October 11, potentially targeting a Hindu place of worship in the Aurora area.
However, authorities have stressed that the precise intended location has not been officially confirmed and remains under investigation.
Some subsequent court reporting has indicated that investigators believe he travelled toward a Hindu temple that day before an alleged firearm malfunction disrupted the plan. Those details form part of the prosecution’s allegations and remain subject to the ongoing investigation.
Rifle, Ammunition and Tactical Gear Recovered
Police arrested Paporakis while he was leaving his residence in Palatine.
A search of the home allegedly uncovered an AR-style rifle, multiple loaded magazines, around 300 rounds of ammunition and tactical equipment.
Investigators also recovered a body-armour vest and items featuring imagery associated with white supremacist and Nazi ideology.
Hindu Places of Worship Alerted
After learning of the possible threat, the Aurora Police Department contacted Hindu places of worship within its jurisdiction and informed them about the investigation.
Authorities said there was no known continuing threat to the public linked to the case after the arrest.
The FBI is assisting local police as investigators examine whether further charges are appropriate.
Palatine Police Chief William Nord credited coordination between law-enforcement agencies and the prompt reporting of suspicious communications for helping authorities intervene.
Indian Consulate Praises ‘Timely Action’
The Consulate General of India in Chicago said it was aware of reports concerning the alleged plot and welcomed the response by US authorities.
The Consulate said it appreciated the “timely action” by law-enforcement agencies and was in contact with members of the Indian diaspora while closely monitoring developments.
Raja Krishnamoorthi Condemns Alleged Plot
Indian-origin US Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi also condemned the alleged plot and raised concerns about anti-Indian hatred and white supremacist extremism.
He said he was grateful to the people who alerted authorities and to law-enforcement officers who intervened before anyone was harmed.
The Hindu American Foundation also welcomed the police action and urged members of the community to remain vigilant and report potential threats.
The investigation remains ongoing, with local police and the FBI examining the suspect’s communications, alleged manifesto, weapons and other recovered material to determine the full circumstances surrounding the alleged plot.
