Importance of Healthy Diet  for elderly

Consuming a healthy and well-balanced diet is very important for staying fit and fine as we age.

Maintaining a healthy diet can help a person manage their weight, remain active and have an intake of the required nutrients to ensure that the body is energetic.

Healthy diet also helps to reduce the risk of developing serious health illnesses such as diabetes and heart-related ailments.

Elderly people, those who are above the age of 60 or 65 years, are at a higher risk of developing diseases due to lack of proper nutrition and healthy intake of foods.

In fact, lack of proper diet has been considered as the root cause of majority of diseases that elderly people face as they age.

Thus, one needs to have foods which are rich in fiber, vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients.

Here are some good options for maintaining a healthy diet among elderly people:

1) As an older adult ages, his ability to conserve water lowers and they don’t feel thirsty often. But as the body requires water to function properly, drinking a lot of water probably by storing in small bottles throughout the day can keep the body hydrated.

2) Foods that are high in Vitamin C such as broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, cabbage, sweet and white potatoes, tomatoes are believed to repair bones, teeth and help in healing wounds. It can also reduce the risk of developing any heart disease and cancer.

3) Vitamin D can be found in cereals, milk, yogurt, and juices and it reduces the risk of falling and developing chronic health issues such as multiple sclerosis, type 2 diabetes, cancer, and rheumatoid osteoporosis among the elderly.

Healthy eating should be combined with a good family and social life. If an elderly person is feeling lonely or depressed due to loss of spouse or good social circle, then talking to a trusted family member or a therapist can help reduce the risk of developing any serious mental health issues.
