Nine Bangladeshi nationals were killed and six others injured after a massive fire broke out at a hotel in Kolkata in the early hours of Wednesday, officials said.

According to Fire Department officials, the victims included six men, two women and a child. They had travelled to Kolkata for medical treatment.

Fire Broke Out Around 2 AM

The fire started at around 2 am. Fire and emergency services rushed to the hotel soon after receiving information about the incident.

Firefighters started rescue operations and managed to bring the blaze under control. Around 80 people were evacuated from the hotel.

Several people reportedly became unconscious after inhaling smoke. They were rescued and taken to hospital.

Six People Injured

Six people were injured in the incident and shifted to a hospital for treatment. Their condition was not immediately known.

Officials said the hotel was operating from an ageing building in a densely built-up area.

Two Hotel Staff Members Detained

Police have detained two hotel staff members for questioning as part of the investigation.

The exact cause of the fire is not yet clear. Police are questioning the hotel staff and investigating the circumstances that led to the blaze.

Authorities are also expected to inspect the hotel premises to determine how the fire started.
