Date:

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) suffered another setback on Thursday after Rajya Sabha MP Prakash Chik Baraik resigned from the Upper House. His resignation comes days after party MPs Sukhendu Sekhar Roy and Sushmita Dev stepped down, taking the number of TMC Rajya Sabha members to quit recently to three.

With Baraik’s exit, the party’s strength in the Rajya Sabha is expected to come down to 10 MPs. Sources also indicated that three more TMC MPs from the Upper House could resign in the coming days, raising concerns for the Mamata Banerjee-led party.

The wave of resignations began on Monday when senior leader and Mamata Banerjee’s close aide Sukhendu Sekhar Roy resigned while the TMC chief was in Delhi attending meetings with INDIA bloc leaders, including Sonia Gandhi.

The meetings were aimed at discussing the opposition’s strategy against the BJP and reviewing the party’s future course after its poor performance in the 2026 Assembly elections.

The latest resignation has added to the growing political challenges facing the TMC, with the possibility of more exits threatening to deepen the crisis within the party.
