Born in Tamil Iyengar family, Hema’s parents were Jaya Lakshmi and VSR Chakravarti.
She attended a school in Chennai and her liked subject was history.
She completed her education till 11th standard and then focused her attention towards making a career in acting.
She made her debut in Hindi with a film called Tum Haseen Main Jawaan (1970) and the male lead of the film was Dharmendra.
Dharmendra was already married and had children, Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol. However, Hema and Dharmendra went on to marry in 1980.
Dharmendra has two children with Hema, Esha Deol (born 1981) and Ahana Deol (born 1985).
Hema is now a grandmother as both her children are happily married and gave birth to one kid each.
