News Desk – The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) is now a key part of India’s new criminal justice laws officially came into effect today. Union Home Minister Amit Shah clarified the first case under these new laws is register in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh about a motorcycle theft.
During a press conference, Shah addressed the confusion surrounding the case of these laws. He explained that a case about a vendor in Delhi is not the first case under this law but a motorcycle theft in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, registered just after midnight.
Amit Shah also highlight that any crime committed before July 1, 2024, would be under the old laws, thereafter would fall under the new legislation.
The introduction of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA), represents India’s criminal justice framework.
These laws replace the Indian Penal Code, the Criminal Procedure Code, and the Indian Evidence Act, respectively. The laws received presidential assent on December 25, 2023.
