New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) questioned Congress’s interim president Sonia Gandhi for three hours in connection with the National Herald case on Thursday and summoned her again on July 25.

It was a little after noon that she arrived at the probe agency’s headquarters along with her children Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi.  Both Priyanka and Rahul accompanied her till the ED office. According to sources in the ED, a woman officer of additional director-level would question her. If she gets fatigued during the questioning, she would be allowed to have rest. As she was infected with the coronavirus, she sought exemption from appearing before the ED on June 8 and June 23.

When Sonia Gandhi was being questioned, the Congress workers intensified protest against the government and the ED. Demonstrations were held across the country and senior party leaders like Sachin Pilot, Jairam Ram Ramesh and Adhir Ranjan Choudhary were detained. Party leader Rahul Gandhi was questioned for 50 hours in June.

The Congress workers stopped trains in Delhi and a car and a two-wheeler were burnt in Bengaluru and Hyderabad, respectively. Congress party workers took to the streets across India, in Mumbai, Delhi, Lucknow, Chandigarh, Guwahati, Chandigarh, Bengaluru and Patna, against the ED’s questioning of Sonia Gandhi. The angry Congress workers called it a political vendetta.
