NationalRajasthan govt dismisses BJP Mayor

Date:

Jaipur: The Rajasthan government led by Ashok Gehlot sacked the Mayor of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Soumya Gurjar from the post amidst political drama on Tuesday, sources said. The Supreme Court took the case on September 23 and asked the state government to take action after two days.

A proposal for dismissal of Gurjar was prepared on Tuesday because of the holiday on Monday. It was sent to Urban Development Minister Shanti Dhariwal. The Autonomous Government Department issued the dismissal order and disqualified her from contesting an election for six years.

Reason for the Mayor’s dismissal was that she had a dispute with Yagyamitra Singh Deo who was then the commissioner of Jaipur. The dispute took place at a meeting between the commissioner and other councillors at the office of Jaipur Municipal Corporation in June last year. After the dispute, Deo left the venue. When he was going out, the councillors not only stopped him at the gate but also thrashed him. The commissioner lodged a case in connection with the incident.

After the incident, Gurjar was suspended, which she challenged in the high court, but on June 28, the court refused to stay the suspension order. She did not get any relief from the apex court, either.
