Jaisalmer (Rajasthan): Rajasthan politics is taking a new turn. If all goes well, the state will soon get a new chief minister, as Ashok Gehlot may be elected to the post of All India Congress (AICC) president. A few hours before the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) getting ready to meet at 7pm in Jaipur Chief Minister of Rajasthan Ashok Gehlot indicated that he might step down as chief minister. He made such an indication for the first time.

Gehlot told reporters that he had started his political career from the National Student Union of India (NSUI), the student wing of the Congress. During the past 50 years he has served the country in different capacities. He has been Union minister thrice, PCC president thrice, AICC general secretary thrice and chief minister of Rajasthan thrice, he said, adding that “what more can a person get? It is on my mind that the new generation should be given a chance.”

Senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge who has been appointed as an observer and Ajay Maken will be present at the meeting.

According to Gehlot, it was the media that had been claiming that he did not want to step down from the post of chief minister in Rajasthan. He took a dig at the media saying they are not acquainted with the ground realities, as it had always been on his mind that he would give a chance to the new generation.

He said he had told the party high command that winning the next election in Rajasthan would be the most important thing. The CLP leaders will give the right to choose a new chief minister for Rajasthan to the party president, which the tradition of the Congress.
