UK PM calls India-China deadlock ‘very serious, worrisome situation’

New Delhi: British Prime Minister Boris Johnson called India and China to negotiate to resolve their border issues, calling the deadlock in East Ladakh a “very serious and worrying situation”. He said that Britain is closely monitoring the situation.

This was Johnson’s first official statement during the weekly ‘Prime Minister’s Questions’ in the House of Commons on Wednesday. Conservative Party MP Flick Drummond had asked questions about the impact on Britain’s interests over a dispute between “a Commonwealth member and the world’s largest democracy”. Johnson called Tanatani a “very serious and worrying situation” in eastern Ladakh and said that Britain was closely monitoring this.

The Prime Minister said, “Probably the best thing I can say is that we are motivating the two sides to negotiate to resolve issues on the border.”

In New Delhi on Wednesday, the Ministry of External Affairs said that India and China agreed to the early implementation of the earlier agreement on the withdrawal of troops from deadlocked points in eastern Ladakh to help ensure an atmosphere of peace in the border areas. The two sides held diplomatic talks through video conferences on ways to reduce tensions on the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the eastern Ladakh region.

The Ministry of External Affairs said that the situation in the region was discussed and the Indian side conveyed its concerns over the violent clash in the Galvan Valley on 15 June. 20 Indian military personnel were martyred in this skirmish.
