The human rights situation in the Xinjiang region should be comprehensively reviewed: UN

Geneva: The UN human rights chief said on Friday that the human rights situation in China’s Xinjiang region needs to be reviewed “independently and comprehensively”. He also underlined that activists, lawyers and human rights defenders in China are being held captive by running false cases. UN Human Rights Commissioner Michschel Bashlet said that his office was working on “mutually agreed points” for the visit to Xinjiang.

The bashlet’s visit to Xinjiang was already being planned before he took over as human rights commissioner in September 2018. Bashlet discussed the subject of China while giving his regular details to the United Nations Human Rights Council on the state of human rights around the world. He praised China for the prevention of covid-19 but also said that “fundamental rights and civil liberties are being violated in the name of national security and covid-19”.
