New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday wanted to know from the Central Government why it cannot form a committee to go through the impact of freebies promised by political parties to woo voters. The government can also call an all-party meeting to examine the issue. A bench headed by Chief Justice NV Ramana told Solitor General Tushal Mehta, representing the Centre, “Why cannot the government of India constitute a committee to stody the impact of freebies…”

Replying to the apex court’s question, Mehta said that the Centre would help in every way and statistics connected to the issue and other information can be placed before the top court. Mehta said that a line should be drawn, where somebody should say, “please do not do this.” Chief Justice Ramana said the question is who should head the committee. He further said that if he were to contest the election, he may not get even ten votes as political parties matter and not the individuals. Justices Hima Kohli CT Ravikumar, the other members of the bench noted freebies etc can destroy the economy. The Chief Justice said, “The government of India can call for an all-party meeting.”
