I have been using social media for the last 15 years. It was at the age of 16 that I was introduced to the world of computers. Living in a lower-middle-class family, we really cannot afford a computer in the 2000s but it was from my elder brother’s office that he got a second-hand assembled computer. The first thing I did on the computer was to type on MS-Word and Notepad. Eventually, an internet connection was started, which was quite costly for us those days and I opened a Gmail account.

Buzz was in college about having an account in Orkut and how it helps to connect with strangers with similar interests. Who knew about fake people or profiles? But even I opened a Orkut account and added all my friends whom I knew in school and college. I learned to type and express myself in words through my Orkut chats and Gmail chats only. Apart from college studies and assignments, we teenagers were occupied in the late 2010s with our accounts on social media sites like Orkut and Facebook.

Then when I got a job in a small website company, I learned about different types of promotions on social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Instagram among others. This helped me almost spend my 6 hours of a day on social media updating status, liking posts, connecting on messengers with others for lead generation, and client servicing for the website company.
I got so much anxiety when a failed incident occurred at my workplace that I decided to really “get a real-life” apart from this social media life. Being a shy and introverted person, I decided to look for purely content writing jobs and thus, got into freelancing. In the last two years of my life, I have seen so much negativity on social media sites about the pandemic and people’s lives in general, that I have decided to stay away from my existing WhatsApp and Facebook accounts for another 3 months. It’s better to cut down the sources of anxiety than reading over bad stuff again and again.
