Ernakulam (Kerala): Contest for the post of All-India Congress Committee (AICC) president took a new turn on Thursday when party leader and Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi hinted that the party would stick to the one-man-one post policy as was declared in the party’s Udaipur convention, sources said.
There may be a contest between Ashok Gehlot and Shashi Tharoor for the top job in the Congress. According to reports, Suresh Pachauri, Mukul Wasnik and Pawan Bansal met interim party president Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday.
Rahul Gandhi, who is Kerala, leading the Bharat Jodo Yatra, told reporters, “I think we have made a commitment in Udaipur and hope that it will be fulfilled.” The remark came as a big relief for Sachin Pilot who is aspiring to become the chief minister of Rajasthan in case the present Chief Minister of the state Ashok Gehlot should become the AICC president. Meanwhile, party sources said that Gehlot, who is in Kerala accompanying Rahul Gandhi in the Yatra, had been tipped to file nomination for the post of party president.
Before leaving for Kerala Gehlot had met Sonia Gandhi and held a meeting with her for two hours. Although it was not known what had transpired between them. She reportedly said that she would not endorse any candidate and the election would be free and fair.
