1984 Anti-Sikh Riots: SIT arrests five more in anti-Sikh riot case

Lucknow: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) has arrested five more persons from Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur district in connection with the 1984 anti-Sikh riots that broke out after the assassination of former prime minister Indira Gandhi, sources said on Thursday. The number of people arrested in connection with the incident has shot up to 11. Most of the alleged accused are over 70 years old now.

Four persons – Saifullah Khan, Bachan, Bappan, and Pakki – were arrested from Ghatampur area in Kanpur on July 15. The Central Government set up the SIT in 2019 to reopen the anti-Sikh riot cases. Out of nearly 94 accused so far identified by the SIT only 74 are alive.

DIG Balendu Bhushan, SIT’s member secretary, said that the team is committed to making more arrests in the case and that most of the accused are aged around 70.
