Forming habits takes many years and same getting rid of some habits also takes a lot of time. But if you want to really do something good in your life and lead a well-balanced lifestyle then some bad habits need to be changed. For example, if you are a tea addict and you don’t get enough sleep if you don’t drink tea at least five to ten times a day, then you really have to change your lifestyle.

Stress Can Increase The Habit Of Drinking In Women, Also Lead Further Problems

Same way, if you are addicted to checking your smartphone throughout the day, and if you feel that you didn’t do anything if you didn’t check your smartphone, then you need to work on changing this habit. Another example of habit addiction is watching or reading the news. I know a woman who becomes restless if the newspaper doesn’t arrive at her home on time. She would avoid eating her breakfast till she gets the morning newspaper on her table. On some days, if the newspaper person fails to deliver the newspaper, she would create a ruckus at home wherein she would keep shouting at her maids and children for getting her the morning newspaper. That’s the kind of addiction this woman had for reading news only through newspapers.

So, if you are someone who is going through a bad time in getting rid of your ill habits, then here is some piece of advice.

1) Make a list of habits that you think are toxic:

As I already gave you the above examples of toxic habits, I am sure you can relate to some of the habits and even have some unique habits in your life that are hampering your growth and harmony in life. So, first and foremost create a list of the habits you want to say tata-bye-bye.

2) Try to understand the root cause of your toxic habits:

For example, drinking coffee or tea might have come to you as a habit because you might have grown up that way. So, how about reducing the intake of coffee and tea by cutting down the proportions? You can even try to understand what makes you get addicted to that habit. Is it some memory of a person or a stressful situation that makes you get into the habit or is it due to sheer boredom? You can find out the possible causes of such toxic habit formation and try to heal the problems with alternate remedies.

3) Reward yourself:

Since childhood, we are used to getting rewards if we perform well in exams or in our personal life. For example, you might have heard how children are told to do their homework sincerely and in exchange, their parents will give them chocolates or take them on an outing on holiday. Same way, in schools or colleges too, there are awards like a best student, best class representative, etc. And in the office too, there is the best employee of the quarter or year, bonus, incentives, etc. So, you have to follow the same system for getting rid of your bad habits. For example, if you are diabetic and are told to avoid eating sugar, you can reward yourself with eating gur or sugar-free sweets once every week for reducing the intake of sugar in your daily diet.
