New Delhi: After fugitive diamond merchant Nirav Modi’s appeal against extradition in the UK High Court was rejected, the Ministry of External Affairs on Thursday said that efforts will continue to bring him back to India soon. The appeal filed by the UK High Court against the extradition to India by Nirav Modi, accused in the Rs 13,000 crore scam involving Punjab National Bank, was dismissed.
Thus, he has lost his battle in the first stage of the appeal to stop the extradition and now has only five days to file a fresh appeal for oral hearing. Britain’s Home Minister Priti Patel ordered the extradition of Nirav Modi to India in April, who is wanted on charges of fraud and money laundering.
When asked about the extradition of Nirav Modi, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said in the weekly press conference, “We have seen the decision of the UK High Court yesterday which was against his (Nirav) appeal against the extradition order. We will continue our efforts for his early extradition to India to bring him to justice.”
At the same time, in response to a question regarding the extradition of absconding diamond businessman Mehul Choksi in the same case, Bagchi said that the Indian side is in touch with the administration of Dominica, where legal process is going on against him. He said that he did not have any other information immediately.
