On Sunday, Nilay Dutta, the Advocate General of Arunachal Pradesh, died after a severe heart attack in Coorg, Karnataka. He was 68 years old and left behind a wife, son, and daughter. ‘The renowned lawyer visited Coorg Wednesday to celebrate his 46th anniversary of his marriage. After having a serious heart attack, he died before he got to the hospital at 2.30 a.m. on Sunday in the resort where his family stayed.”
His relatives claimed he would be cremated in Bengaluru during the day since COVID-19 regulations in Karnataka prevent his remains from being transported back to Assam, where he was born, for the next three days. Dutta shared many photos of his anniversary festivities with his family and close friends on Twitter on Friday and Saturday. He was one of Assam’s and the Northeast’s most renowned and respected legal minds, having contested many issues before the Supreme Court.

Dutta attended Delhi’s St. Stephen’s College and was subsequently arrested and imprisoned for involvement in the Naxalite movement. He worked as a bank team member and subsequently as an advocate after his release. Since 2016, he has served as the Advocate General of Arunachal Pradesh.
Dutta, a sports fanatic, served as president of the Assam Cricket Association and umpired numerous international cricket tournaments. He was also a member of the Union Home Ministry’s High-Level Committee (HLC) on Clause-6 of the Assam Accord, which presented its findings in February of last year. His premature death sparked outrage from all sides of the political spectrum.
