London: World Health Organization (WHO) top scientist Dr Saumya Swaminathan said on Thursday (18 June) that the organization is optimistic about the Covid-19 vaccine being available before the end of this year. During a press conference held in Geneva in the wake of ongoing medical trials on the treatment of corona virus treatment, Swaminathan said that it has been proved that the anti-malarial drug hydroxychloroquine prevented the deaths of hospitalized people after being infected with the corona virus.
In the context of future vaccines that protect against this deadly virus, he said that about 10 candidates are in the human trials phase and that at least three of them are entering a new stage where a vaccine proves to be effective.
Referring to the WHO’s effort on effective vaccines, Swaminathan said, “I hope so.” I am hopeful, but developing vaccines is a very complex process and there is also a lot of uncertainty. The good thing is that we have many different candidates and platforms. ”
