New Delhi: As the countdown for the election of the Congress president has begun, the party is still mulling over the candidate’s name, party sources said on Wednesday. Many senior leaders urged Sonia Gandhi to continue as the party president till the general elections in 2024. They said that if anyone other than a member of the Gandhi clan takes over the party, it would disintegrate and that Priyanka Gandhi should be given the command after 2024.

According to sources, Sonia Gandhi hinted at the name of Ashok Gehlot, saying that if no one from the Gandhi family is made the president of the party, Gehlot should be elected to the post. She also said this to Gehlot in a meeting between two leaders on Tuesday. Both Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka are going abroad for their mother and Congress’ interim president Sonia Gandhi’s check-up.
