New Delhi: Hundreds of protestors have gathered at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar over the brutal gang-rape of a 19-year-old Dalit girl in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras on September 14. Apart from policemen, senior police officers and paramilitary personnel have been deployed to handle the crowd.
Police has barricaded the protest site to prevent movement of protesters. Senior lawyers Prashant Bhushan, actress Swara Bhaskar, CPI (M) leader Brinda Karat and Sitaram Yechury, AAP leader Saurabh Bhardwaj, are among those gathered to demand justice for the Hathras victim at Jantar Mantar.
On September 14, a 19-year-old Dalit girl was gang-raped by four youths in Hathras and died on Tuesday at Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi, after which her body was cremated on Wednesday night. The victim’s family alleges that the police forced them to perform the last rites at night. However, local police say the last rites were performed “as per the wishes of the family”.
