Senior Congress leader Motilal Vora dies at 93

New Delhi: Veteran Congress chief Motilal Vora died on Monday. He was 93. Senior get together MP Rahul Gandhi remembered him as a “true congressman and a wonderful human being” in his condolence message on Twitter. Several different leaders additionally paid tribute to the chief.

“Vora ji was a true congressman and a wonderful human being. We will miss him very much. My love & condolences to his family and friends,” he tweeted.

Priyanka Gandhi tweeted on the demise of the Congress leader and said, ‘Every leader of Congress party, every worker is feeling personally sad because of Motilal Vora ji’s death. Vora ji was a symbol of loyalty, dedication and patience to the Congress ideology.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot tweeted that the veteran chief was a rare character, “whose life was dedicated to the Congress”.

“He worked dedicatedly for the party until his last breath. His demise is a huge loss to the party. May his family and supporters find strength. May his soul rest in peace,” he tweeted.

Motilal Vora entered politics in 1968. He has also been the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh and the Governor of Uttar Pradesh. Motilal was also a Rajya Sabha MP from Chhattisgarh till April this year. Motilal Vora contested the Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections in 1970 after stepping into politics in 1968. He was later appointed as deputy chairman of Madhya Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation. In 1977 and 1980 also he was successful in winning the assembly elections. He took over the Higher Education Department in 1980 in Arjun Singh’s cabinet. After this he became a Cabinet Minister in 1983 and was also appointed as Chairman of Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee. On 13 February 1985, he became the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh. However, three years later in 1988, he resigned from the post of Chief Minister and took charge of Health, Family Welfare and Civil Aviation Department. Motilal was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1988. He was also the Governor of Uttar Pradesh from May 26, 1993 to May 3, 1996.
