New Delhi: US President joe Biden wants to make Indian-American Neera Tandon the head of the budget department, but Neera’s old tweets have become a hindrance for her. Due to these tweets, some Democrat MPs along with Republicans are also against her appointment. These MPs can vote against the proposal to make 50-year-old Neera the budget director. Voting is to be held on Neera’s appointment on Wednesday. Biden is confident that Neera’s name will get Senate approval.
Democrat Senator Joe Manchin spoke of voting against Neera. The US Senate has 50-50 MPs from both Democrats and Republicans. In case of a tie, Vice President Kamala Harris may vote decisively. But now that Manchin is opposed, Biden will need the support of at least one Republican MP for approval in the name of Neera. No Republican senator has spoken to vote in favor of Neera yet.
The reason for this opposition of Neera is her old tweets. In these tweets, she called Senate Minority Leader Mitch Maconel a Moscow-Witch and called Senator Tom Cotton a fraud. Comparing Senator Ted Cruz to Vampire, she even said that Vampire’s heart would be bigger than Ted Cruz’s. She also spared Senator Bernie Sanders, the head of the budget committee. However, after these criticisms, Neera has deleted the old tweets, and has also apologized. Some senators have also objected that the organization (Center for American Progress) that Neera previously worked for has received $ 38 million in donations from US companies since 2014.
